You’ve probably seen cockapoos running around in dog parks with so much chaotic energy. Their exuberant ways make them an entertaining dog companion. They are balls of energy that can run all day long with reckless abandon. But have you ever wondered how fast can a cockapoo run? Welcome to the cockapoo curious club. After watching a lot of cockapoos run through agility courses, we’re convinced that they can compete with some of the fastest small dog breeds around.
What’s the Running Speed of the Cockapoo?
How fast is fast? Cockapoos can run at speeds of 20-25 miles per hour (32-40 kilometers per hour). That’s in the average range for sporty dogs but quite quick for small dog breeds like the cockapoo.
To give some perspective, human athletes have an average sprinting speed of 15 mph and elite athletes can run up to 26 mph. Puny little humans like me would have an average speed of 6-8 mph. Superathlete Usain Bolt’s top speed was 27 mph during the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. But his average speed hovers at 23 to 24 mph. So if Usain Bolt needs a running companion, a cockapoo is a good dog candidate.
Are Cockapoos Good Running Partners?
Even if your cockapoo can run at top speeds, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is built for a running regimen similar to yours, especially if you’re a runner. But if we’re talking about running or jogging as a form of daily exercise for your cockapoo, then yes, cockapoos make excellent running companions.
The cockapoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, resulting in a highly intelligent, even-tempered dog that gets along well with humans and other pets. It’s safe to say that the cockapoo can inherit the desirable characteristics of the parent breeds.
In terms of energy and stamina, a cockapoo is an active and tireless dog. A cockapoo needs about 30 minutes of exercise to burn off the energy. Cockapoos are naturally playful so engaging them in fun activities is effortless.
Jogging with Cockapoos
Cockapoos have an amazing stamina so they can go jogging with their humans and even go on long-distance trails. Before taking your cockapoo for a jog, make sure he’s in good physical health with no injuries.
Once your cockapoo is cleared for health, you can take him jogging. But first, you need a harness, a lead, and a collapsible water bottle. We’re not a fan of using a collar when jogging because it puts strain on the dog’s neck, especially when you have to redirect him or call his attention to slow down.
A breathable no-pull and choke-free harness is ideal for your cockapoo when you take him jogging or running. With jogging, breathability is very important for your cockapoo to prevent overheating and fatigue. Attach the harness to a hands-free lead and you’re good to go.
Don’t forget to bring your cockapoo’s water bottle to make sure he stays hydrated.
